As the European Commission's science and knowledge service, the Joint Research Centre's mission is to support EU policies with independent and relevant scientific and technical knowledge. To support this mission, JRC has developed throughout the years competences in foresight, horizon scanning, and monitoring of innovation. In that context, IT tools are being developed by JRC to provide policy makers with relevant knowledge on various policy fields.
The TIM Technology tools aim at providing specific and relevant knowledge on innovation and technological development. Our objective is to offer the possibility to policy-makers to answer concrete policy needs related to innovation networks, impact evaluation of EU programmes, emerging trends and technologies, funding orientations, regional strategies, and other needs related to research and innovation policy.
We provide ready made IT solutions but also offers customized services. Our IT systems rely on the bridging of different datasets and on the use of text mining and computational linguistic techniques, such as semantic analysis, to treat and enrich individual data items with useful information. Datasets can then be explored from different angles by the users through various visualisations. As datasets are being updated regularly, the data visualised in TIM Technology are automatically and regularly refreshed.
CERN has developed Collaboration Spotting (CollSpotting), an experimental software suite that initially aimed at providing the Particle Physics community with intelligence on Academia & Industry players active around key technologies, with a view to fostering more interorganisational R&D collaborations.
Europe Media Monitor (EMM) lets you easily see, explore and understand current news reported by the world’s online media. Monitoring thousands of news sources in over 70 languages, the system uses advanced information extraction techniques to automatically determine what is being reported in the news, where things are happening, who is involved and what they said.
